July 11, 2008 State Meeting MinutesCounty Agricultural Agents Board Meeting July 11, 2008 Koury Convention Center, Greensboro, NC
President-Elect Stanley Holloway called meeting to order at 2:05 pm and welcomed everyone to Greensboro.
Secretary’s Report – Nancy Keith A motion to accept the minutes that were sent out via email as well as distributed was made. The motion was seconded. Motion carries.
Treasurer’s Report – Barry Foushee Checking 1/1/08 $18,145.78 Income 10,554.58 Expenses 23,515.85 Balance $ 5,184.51 Includes outstanding checks Savings - $12,767.52 Total $17,952.03 $8000 for DSA & AA Should not have to transfer much from trust fund J.B. Coltrain made a motion to accept Treasurer Report. Bill Skelton seconded the motion. Motion carries.
2008 State Meeting Update – Bill Skeleton 120 registrations 116 members 14 spouses 2 children 143-144 registered for banquet $2510.00 – registration fees 185.00 – at meeting $5700 sponsorships Cost of meeting $5700 - $5800 All awards will be given at banquet – communication awards, DSA. AA, YASA and Service to Agriculture
Schedule for Districts to Host State Meetings – Kelly Groves Went thru list of rotation schedule and took the two districts that were closest together and combined NW/SW to West Central and shifted up to determine location of state meeting. 2009 – NC District 2010 – NE District The rotation of electing the Vice-Director and the district to host the state meeting is the district of the President-Elect:
Communications Awards – Curtis Fountain 28 agent winners – There were 60 entries and 51 entries were judged. 9 entries were not complete (abstract was not complete).

Nominating Committee - The nominating committee presents as a slate of officers for NCACAA for 2008-2009 the following: President – Stanley Holloway President-Elect – Kelly Groves Vice-President – Gerda Rhodes Secretary – Nancy Keith Treasurer – Barry Foushee Marjorie Rayburn made a motion to accept the slate of officers as presented by the nominating committee. Daniel Shires seconded the motion. Motion carries.
Public Relations Committee – Marjorie Rayburn There were 2 entries in the Public Relations Category. Wayne Batten was selected as a state winner.
Horticulture Committee – Cindi Lauderdale In 2007-2008, for the third year in a row, zero entries were submitted to the NACAA Horticulture Awards Program. In September 2002 the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service lost one of our Horticulture Agents, Lewis Stillman Howe III, to a heart attack. It was suggested to start a scholarship in Howe's name. This $500 professional improvement scholarship will be given yearly at the NCACAA State meeting. In 2007-2008, for the third year in a row, zero entries were received. It has been a pleasure to serve as the Horticulture Chair this past year although disappointing the lack of applications. I encourage all Agricultural Agents working in horticulture to apply for these awards. Recognition and Awards Committee – Eric Spaulding There are now 7 awards that the Recognition and Awards Committee is responsible for. They include Distinguished Service Award (DSA) for NCACAA members with more than 10 years of service; Achievement Award (AA) for NCACAA members with less than 10 years of service; The Service to Agriculture Award for someone who has made significant contributions to agriculture in North Carolina or the region; Young Agent Scholarship Award for agents who shall not be over 30 years of age, with 5 years of service or less by October 1st of the year nominated; NACAA's Hall Of Fame; and the 'Ort Scholarship Award', which is new. Dr. Jon Ort, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Associate Dean and Director along with his wife Debbie have established this award to recognize members of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Faculty and Staff. Each Association should select an individual who demonstrates exceptional capabilities to "help North Carolina's people put knowledge to work" through their professional leadership and vision. The Dr. Jon and Mrs. Debbie Ort Scholarship Award for Outstanding Cooperative Extension Personnel Award is given through the Extension Foundation and has August 15th application deadline. Our committee's awards have a different application deadline than the other awards programs. We are using electronic submission for the state awards. NACAA applications are now completed and submitted on-line. Application forms will be revised for 2009. Applicants will only need to complete the North Carolina Forms to apply.

We have established a policy on submitting names for potential recognition. Each district will send the names of their nominees to the State Chair before applications are completed. The list of nominees will then be forwarded onto Extension Administration for review and approval. The District Chairs will be notified of administration's recommendations and proceed with submitting nomination materials. Each district is encouraged to have an alternate candidate identified to avoid losing a nomination slot. Only applications approved by the District Chairs will be accepted. District Chairs are responsible for sending completed information to the State Chair. Districts are urged to make sure that persons nominated will be able to attend the appropriate recognition banquet(s) to receive their award. The 2008 Awards Winners are as follows:
Benevolence Committee – Frank Winslow Make sure that when a member or retired member passes away that the state chair is notified. A moment of silence to remember Harvey Morris- Bladen County, Tom Andrews – Caldwell County and Walden Hearn – Pasquotank County.
Southern Region Director Report – Alan Galloway Alan is an Area Farm Management Specialist in TN. He started off by recognizing the 2007 DSA and AA winners. He mentioned that Kansas had been selected to host the national meeting in 2011. The 2008 national officers are as follows: Fred Miller – President Rick Gibson – President-Elect Phil Pratt – Vice-President Leon Church – Secretary Paul Wigley – Treasurer
Alan spoke of committees and the importance of committees in the association. The National Council Chair helps to oversee committee work. Scholarships are available to anyone who has paid $40 into the National Scholarship Fund. The $40 has to be paid the year before applying for a scholarship. $17,000 was awarded in 2007. North Carolina has donated $8388 and has received $12,994 in scholarships. Outstanding Young Farmer is nominated by extension agents. Three out of the four nominations were from the Southern Region. One hundred four posters were presented. There are 1464 people registered for the ’08 NACAA AMPIC and Director Calloway commended North Carolina for an outstanding job. Candidates for 2008-2009 National Officers for NACAA are: President – Rick Gibson President Elect – Phil Pratt Vice President – Stan Moore Neil Broadwater Todd Lorentz Secretary – Henry Dorough Treasurer – Paul Wigley South Carolina is bidding to host the NACAA AMPIC in 2012. Policy Change to allow the national board to do business electronically.
2009 State Meeting Report – Will Strader Looking in the Research Triangle area for a place to hold the 2009 state meeting. A lot of the same people who were on committees to host the 2008 national meeting are on the planning committee for the ’09 state meeting.
National Meeting Update – Mark Tucker Mark indicated that there are 1461 registered for the meeting. There are 175 NC agents registered and some who are volunteering who are not registered. There are over 200 NC agents involved. 800 agents 305 spouses 133 sons and daughters 127 first timers North Carolina’s Hospitality Room is 364. The North Carolina nightly meetings at 10:00 pm will be held in Auditorium 4. Meeting adjourned at 2:55 pm. |
